River Canyon Roadside Clean-up

  • Merced River Recreation Area, Briceburg Visitor Center Parking 11202 Bull Creek Road Mariposa, CA, 95338 United States (map)

In collaboration with CalTrans, the Upper Merced River Watershed Council has adopted a 3-mile stretch of Highway 140 in the Merced River Canyon, from Slate Creek Bridge to Miller Gulch. We’ll meet at the Briceburg parking area and then collect trash, pick up recyclables--and generally make our river a healthier, happier place.

How it works:

Groups will carpool to the clean-up site. Safety is our #1 priority. Clean-up teams are given safety instructions and must wear safety vests and hard hats. Depending on the number in our clean-up group, a typical clean-up session is about 2-3 hours to do our designated stretch.

Participants must be at least 16 years old. Since CalTrans considers 16 and 17 year-olds as minors, one adult supervisor must be present at the work site for every 5 minors participating (adult supervisor must be 21 years of age).

We’ll provide all of the safety gear.

What to bring:

  • Wear close-toed shoes or boots, long pants, and preferably long-sleeved shirt.

  • Water for at least 3 hours.

  • Bring a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen.
