WELCOME!

Welcome to the Upper Merced River Watershed Council website. Start here for the latest information on watershed events and opportunities to help. Browse the buttons on the left for more about the watershed and our organization.

What is a watershed?
From mountain top to mountain top, it's the land that water flows across or under on its way from streams and rivers to lakes and oceans. It's where you live, work, and play!

WHAT'S NEW IN THE WATERSHED?

You won't want to miss GO WITH THE FLOW, our first stakeholder presentation of 2012! Katie Wallace, science educator with NatureBridge's Yosemite campus, recently walked and paddled 150 miles of the Merced River from Mt. Lyell to the San Joaquin River. Please join us for her presentation as she shares stories, photos, and musings on her journey through the watershed.

It is safe to swim! Results are in. Safe-to-Swim is a coordinated effort between the Central Valley Water Board staff and the public (like our faithful volunteers) to collect water quality data at local recreational areas of interest (swimming holes).  Volunteers collect water quality samples to be tested for total coliform and E.Coli along with collecting data on water temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, total dissolved solids (TDS), and turbidity. Bacteria results are made public on the internet to inform the public of the health of the local swimming holes. Visit
https://sites.google.com/site/safetoswimcitizenmonitoring/home and click on Site Information & Results at the left of that webpage to view the report on the three local swimming holes as well as others in the region included in the 2011 study.

Congratulations to our Citizen Water Quality Monitors, who were recently recognized by the Natural Resources Conservation Service for helping NRCS fulfill its commitment to working with people to protect and conserve our Nation's natural resources.

THE COUNCIL HAS COMPLETED ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL SEASON

OF INVASIVE WEED WORK

In June of 2011, only one Yellow Starthistle plant could be found when work began in the Willow Placer control area in the Merced River Canyon (left). At right is the same area in 2005 where YST stood 6' tall. Can you find the person?

A recent Mariposa Gazette article highlighted the Council's work on invasive weeds in the Merced River Canyon.  Read the complete article   View Invasive Weed Alerts to help you identify and manage infestations on your property.
